I WAS TOO!! Before my first speech I remember pacing around the room as my heart rate sped up and my breathing became short and labored. Inside I was a mess!

This was my icebreaker, the getting to know Richard speech, and I was nervous and fearful because I had only been to 2 meetings and no one really knew me.

My speech was only 6 minutes long.  Afterwards my evaluator gave me some feedback on my content and said, "You had 29 filler words.  That made it really hard for me to connect to your story and see how it applied to me."

29 filler words!! Those are the words you use when you are in transition between thoughts or when you get off track in your speech.

That's 5 per minute, one every 12 seconds...GEEZ!!

 Once I took action then things began to change

It took me at least 9 months before I was comfortable getting up in front of even those 8 people and that was only after serving in roles like Toastmasters, evaluator and table topics master (small speaking roles in the club meetings) I probably gave 10 speeches and served in 30 club roles in those 9 months.

In addition, I had mentors that gave me crucial advice early on and throughout my journey. I also had the honor of talking to and attending trainings of 6 World Champion Speakers.

In 2012 my club encouraged me to compete in

the World Champion of Public Speaking (WCPS) contest.

WHO ME? I asked!

I practiced and practiced and practiced and ended up winning at the club level. Then I went to the Area level and won again! Then at the Division level I finished second.

I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but to put this into perspective, the Division had almost 400 members and I placed #2! For me, at the time, that was a very big deal!

Second place never sounded so good!! Plus, I got a trophy!

In 2014 I began serving as the Division Director. I filled this role until 2016 and gave over 42 keynotes and trainings in that year and a half. One area I worked with grew their membership by 27 members and achieved the Distinguished Area status in Toastmasters International. Something they hadn't achieved in 3 years.

This was definitely a far cry from where I was in June of 2010!!

Fast forward to 2017, I had given over 100 speeches, trainings and seminars. I had served in various leadership roles at the local, area and district levels of Toastmasters and had helped keynote many club meetings and district trainings to help the clubs grow their membership.

In June of 2017 I walked across the stage to accept my Distinguished Toastmaster Award at the District 68 conference, placing me in the top 1% of all Toastmasters in the world.

I tell you this story, not to brag. Yes I’m proud, but I’m more proud of my journey to becoming a CONFIDENT SPEAKER. That journey changed me in many different ways!
